Quick guide for the use of Venetian marble plastering materials

Venetian marble plastering, or polished plaster differs from the application of skimming using a gypsum based plaster
it differs in the materials themselves, it differs in the application process, it differs in the technique.

The materials:
Venetian marble plaster manufactured and supplied by Goldtrowel is a lime based product
it contains approx 50% pure marble, oils and other natural elements
the set (drying time) can be from many hours to just seconds

Goldtrowel Venetian polished plaster is a either pre-tinted or natural marble plaster mix that you can tint with a colour additive, the marble plaster dries to a glass like smoothness with incredible depth thus beautifully replicating marble.

Venetian plaster can be directly applied to primed, conventionally plastered walls or ceilings.
Two three or more thin layers are applied. As each tissue thin coat builds, translucency and depth of colour increase. The final coat is burnished with the trowel resulting in a smooth, highly polished marble-like lustre. The finished surface has a build of less than 1mm. It is then protected with a thin layer of wax or lacquer to repel stains and water and to enhance shine

Goldtrowel gives you the options of using either pre-mixed Venetian plaster or you can add your own colour additives to the goldtrowel marble mix, you can also mix the additives to suit your colour requirement.

The process:
The procedure for applying the basecoat (first coat) of Venetian marble plaster is different yet similar to skimming using gypsum finish plasters.
So that you get a good understanding 3 coats of Venetian plaster should still be less than 1mm thick although it will give the appearance of being very deep due to its translucency.
Before you start the surface must be sound and free from the usual dirt grease flaking paint etc.
its good practice to fill any hollow points and sand the surface using a block sander

Now we can prime the surface with the special marble primer,
the primer contains fungicidal agents amongst other ingredients to eliminate any future problems caused by damp conditions such as found in bathrooms and kitchens
the surface is primed by roller and or brush and usually only requires one coat

when the primer has dried usually left until the next day we can then apply the first coat of Venetian marble plaster.
As you skim this first coat onto the wall or ceiling you quickly realise you could easily cover 200 metres plus in a day.
It glides over the surface with the greatest of ease due to the fine quality of the plaster
Unlike gypsum plasters where you only have minutes before you need to trowel out the surface Venetian marble plaster will give you hours.
The problems that many people who are new to Venetian marble plastering face are self inflicted and the greatest of them all is impatience.

as the basecoat starts to dry you have different options depending upon the finish you require
you can flatten it out or not flatten it out and let the high points bleed through
when the first coat has dried completely and you begin to apply the second coat this will dry in seconds as will the third and fourth coats plus
it is possible to get a great finish with just three coats but i have to point out that timing is very important when burnishing.
burnishing the marble plaster is achieved by polishing the surface with the flat of the trowel amongst other techniques

after the surface has been burnished you will notice how shiny it is

you would have to leave this for a while prior to waxing or lacquering.
Mica powders can be used to achieve a metallic shine to the surface in silver bronze gold or pearlescent
